Accustomed to American, English and more rarely Italian TV series, I must say that the idea of a German product did not thrill me … especially given the previous ones such as “Derrik” or “A case for two”. But, it must have been the choice of the soundtrack., the plot, the continuous comparisons with LOST, or simple curiosity, I gave in. I prepared frankfurters and sauerkraut * to get in the mood, I uncorked an EKU 28, and I spread out on the sofa bed with the first episode of DARK.
And then the second one, and then the third one and then the fourth one….
Only at 3 in the morning, when my eyes were asking for mercy, I managed to detach myself from this psychedelic drama of a thousand mysteries!
Time travel. Trivially I could say that the main theme is this one, but it would really reduce to the bone an intricate and well-studied series in which every detail is combined with the other in a very refined game of references between 1953, 1986 and 2019.
“The division between past, present and future has only the value of an obstinate illusion”
Thirty-three years in which events seem to repeat and influence each other. But how? WHY?
The next day I returned home with the desire to understand, to be able to get answers from at least one of the characters. But each of them tends to hide the truth, and only together with them we understand what is happening to Vindem.
But the answers only raise other questions, “Who are the good guys? Who are the bad guys? Why do they travel through time? How can it be stopped? ” , so much so that I began to dream of it even at night.
Vindem mesmerized me, I am addicted to its inhabitants and its mysteries.
Dark has been compared to Stranger Things, but immediately reveals an evolution in the plot that is much creepier and darker than the Duffer brothers’ series. Opening from the crude discoveries of the bodies of mutilated children in the face, up to the gloomy scenes of the death of the animals as a whole, then continuing with the weighted superabundance of the number 33, the numerous references to Einstein and the physics of black holes and / or to the idea of eternal return of the same proposed by Nietzsche, whose idea of circularity is the basis of the whole series, able to keep viewers attached to the screen until the end.
I finished it in three days, with an inflamed belly from the beer and a completely confused head, I can only recommend it to anyone I meet! And look forward to the second season.
This is a TV series that in my opinion should be watched alone to be able to take notes, stop in the highlights, decide to review parts. Playing with the show.
On a winter evening, while the rain is pouring outside (as in ¾ of the TV series scenes), turning off all technology and wrapped up in a warm blanket. With some German food and rivers of beer.
*Wurstel with sauerkraut
(recipe from my mum)
– 400 grams of canned sauerkraut
– vinegar, salt to taste
– 400 ml of water
– 4 sausages
In a saucepan, put the onion cut into small pieces and add the sauerkraut after having drained them. We pour 400 ml of hot water, a tablespoon of vinegar and a sprinkle of salt. Let it boil, after putting the lid on the pot, for about an hour. If necessary, we add more water.
On a grill, cook the sausages. When the sauerkraut is cooked, drain it with a pierced ladle and place it on a flat plate, covering the entire surface. On top of the sauerkraut, we place the sausages et voilà.
 Winden, 2019.
